# Where your work runs

Thinair runs each app and File you open in a place, and picks the computer for you.

When you open an app or a File in Thinair, Thinair decides where it runs, the
way an operating system runs a program without asking which processor to use.
You never pick a computer.

## Places [#places]

Everything runs in a place:

* **Your computer**: the one you are using.
* **Thinair Native**: the Thinair app on your computer.
* **Thinair Cloud**: Thinair's own computers, online.

In the Thinair app on your computer, apps run in Thinair Native. In a web
browser, they run in Thinair Cloud. A window's title bar, menus and messages
name the place, such as "Thinair Native isn't responding", never a computer.

## Apps and Files [#apps-and-files]

Each app you open runs on its own, apart from every other app. Right-click the
canvas and choose **Apps** to open one, such as Google Chrome: its window
appears where you clicked and says it is starting until the app is ready.
Choose **New Terminal** to open a shell on your computer, in Thinair Native, or in
Thinair Cloud.

A File that holds code, such as a repository, a component or a video, also
runs on its own when you open it. Your Files are saved in Thinair, so closing
an app or a File loses nothing you saved.

## Profiles [#profiles]

Every app runs as one of your Profiles: the sign-ins, keys, setup and Files for
one area of your work. When you open a new app, Thinair first asks which
Profile to use, as Chrome asks "Who's using Chrome?". The app keeps that Profile
until it closes.

## Agents [#agents]

The Thinair agent runs on its own too, as its conversation's Profile. It sees
the same Thinair Files you do, in `~/Thinair`. It runs commands only in its own
space and in the Files and Terminals it opens, and it reaches your other apps
only through what they offer.

See [Get Started](/get-started) to begin using Thinair.
